Spain Digital Nomad Visa Renewal: Documents and Practical Checklist
Prepare a renewal file that matches how you actually work in Spain.
Table of contents
Quick summary
- A standard international teleworker residence renewal is for two years, provided the qualifying conditions continue.
- Prepare current evidence of your work, finances, Social Security and healthcare.
- A residence renewal, a change in professional circumstances and a new TIE are different steps.
First, check what you are renewing
“Digital Nomad Visa renewal” is a common search term, but your document may be a consular visa or a residence authorisation issued through UGE. A one-year visa holder moving to a residence authorisation follows a different procedure from someone renewing an existing residence permit.
For an existing international teleworker residence authorisation, article 74 quinquies of Law 14/2013 provides for renewals in two-year periods if the conditions continue. Do not plan on another automatic three-year permit.
Your renewal preparation checklist
Use this as a working folder structure. Match the final uploads to the current renewal procedure in the UGE electronic portal and any request concerning your case. The public UGE document guide linked below is labelled for initial applications; it should not be presented as an exhaustive renewal-specific list.
| Folder | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| Identity and residence | Valid passport, current TIE and the original approval decision. Keep a complete passport scan ready. |
| Application and fee | Current MIT form appropriate to the procedure, signed as instructed; Modelo 790 code 038 and proof of payment; representation documents if someone files for you. |
| Ongoing remote work | Current employment or service contracts, extensions and updated confirmation of the remote-working arrangement where relevant. |
| Income | Recent payslips or invoices and corresponding bank receipts, organised so payments can be matched to their source. |
| Tax records | Spanish returns already due and filed, with submission receipts; an explanation where the filing history needs context. |
| Social Security | Evidence of the applicable registration or a valid certificate of applicable legislation covering the work and period concerned. |
| Healthcare | Evidence of entitlement to public healthcare or suitable private cover where needed. |
| Family | Each applicant’s identity and residence documents, plus evidence relevant to continuing family eligibility and household resources. |
Generate the fee for the correct procedure when you prepare the application. An old blog’s euro amount or a receipt from your initial application is not a reliable renewal payment reference.
Make the financial evidence easy to follow
Create a simple index connecting each contract to the relevant payslips or invoices and bank payments. Explain differences caused by currency conversion, payment platforms or irregular invoice dates. A bank balance without context can leave the source and continuity of your resources unclear.
The UGE guidance uses the current SMI as the reference: 200% for the principal applicant, an additional 75% for the first accompanying family member and 25% for each further member. Recalculate for your household when preparing the file.
That guidance also allows documented savings or other liquid income to cover a shortfall for the authorisation period. This does not remove the need for qualifying remote work or guarantee a renewal. If relying on a combination of earnings and savings, prepare the calculation and supporting bank certificates explicitly.
Tax returns: collect the right records
Gather the Spanish tax returns that were due for your circumstances. Do not choose Modelo 100, 151 or 210 just because another applicant used it: tax residence, the type of income and any special tax regime matter.
The public documents reviewed for this guide do not establish a universal renewal rule requiring every applicant to submit exactly two Spanish annual tax returns. Follow the live renewal instructions and any individual request. If a requested year predates your arrival or a return was not legally due, explain that with the relevant evidence.
If returns are missing or need correction, address the tax position before relying on them in an immigration file. At Anemoss, we coordinate related tax questions with our professional network.
Social Security and healthcare: check both
Review your actual registration history, not just the commitment you signed in the first application. For self-employed applicants, gather the RETA registration record and contribution history. If you rely on foreign coverage, check its scope and expiry rather than assuming it lasts as long as your TIE.
UGE expressly warns that failure to complete the required self-employed registration can lead to the authorisation being terminated. If there is a gap, prepare a dated timeline and assess the correction required. Do not assume that paying backdated contributions automatically resolves the immigration consequences.
A certificate exempting you from Spanish Social Security contributions does not necessarily provide Spanish public healthcare. Check healthcare entitlement separately and arrange suitable insurance where required. Travel insurance is not a substitute.
Changes, filing and the new card
A new client, a different employer or a move from employment to self-employment deserves a review before you select “renewal”. Explain what changed and when. Our guide to moving from employment to self-employment discusses that separate situation.
File electronically and retain the registration receipt. Article 76 of Law 14/2013 extends the authorisation while a renewal is decided, including where filed within 90 days after expiry, without excluding a possible penalty for late filing. Plan to file before expiry; do not treat the late window as an automatic extension without submitting anything.
After approval, deal with the new TIE. A fingerprint appointment does not submit the residence renewal. If you need to travel with an expired card, check re-entry documentation before booking.

Common mistakes
- Reusing an expired contract or foreign coverage certificate.
- Treating a commitment to register as proof that registration happened.
- Uploading tax forms that do not match your circumstances.
- Assuming the new permit will automatically last three years.
- Booking fingerprints without filing the residence renewal.

Frequently asked questions
Does a standard Digital Nomad residence renewal last three years?
No. Law 14/2013 provides for two-year renewals where the qualifying conditions continue.
Must everyone submit two Spanish annual tax returns?
Do not assume a universal rule from a blog checklist. Prepare the returns due for your situation and follow the current renewal instructions and any individual request.
Can savings help if my earnings are below the threshold?
UGE’s published document guidance provides for savings or other liquid income to cover the difference over the authorisation period. You must still demonstrate qualifying remote work and meet the remaining conditions.
Does foreign Social Security coverage remove the need for health insurance?
Only if you can demonstrate the necessary healthcare entitlement. Contribution coverage and healthcare coverage are separate questions.
Is renewing my TIE the same as renewing my residence?
No. First renew the residence authorisation; the new physical card is a separate step.
