What the TIE is
The Foreigner Identity Card (TIE) identifies the foreign person and proves their stay or residence authorization in Spain. It includes personal details, NIE, photo, authorization type and expiry date.
The TIE must be valid, in good condition and have updated data.
When to request a duplicate
You should request a duplicate when the physical card no longer works or its data does not match your current situation:

The duplicate does not change your NIE and generally does not extend the permit duration. The new card normally keeps the same expiry date unless it comes from a renewal or modification.
Loss or theft
If your TIE is lost or stolen, report it, book a cita previa for a replacement, select the correct police option, attend in person with the complete documents and keep the receipt.
Damaged card or data changes
If the card is damaged, you will normally need to bring it with you. Changes to personal details must first be supported by official evidence, such as an updated empadronamiento, Civil Registry certificate, administrative decision or consular document. Foreign documents may require a sworn translation, legalization or an apostille.

Usually required:
- EX-17 completed and signed.
- Valid original passport and copy.
- Recent passport-style photo.
- Proof of payment of fee 790 code 012.
- Police report for loss or theft.
- Previous TIE for damage or data change.
- Updated empadronamiento, if required.
- Document proving the data change where applicable.
- Favorable decision if linked to a modification or renewal.

Timeline and travel
The usual timeframe is around 20 to 40 days, depending on the police station. If the TIE expires soon, it may be better to renew the authorization instead of requesting only a duplicate.
If you need to travel before receiving the card, check whether you need an autorizacion de regreso to return to Spain with your passport while the card is being renewed, duplicated or issued.
Common mistakes
- Travelling outside Spain without checking whether an autorización de regreso is needed.
- Requesting a duplicate when the card is close to expiry and renewal may be better.
