How to Renew a TIE: Deadlines, Fee and Fingerprints

Renewing a TIE normally involves two separate procedures: renewing the residence authorisation and, once approved, requesting a new physical card.

First renew the residence authorisation

If your authorisation is approaching expiry, you must normally renew it first. Requirements and forms depend on the permit, such as employed or self-employed residence and work, non-lucrative residence, family reunification, long-term study stay or another temporary authorisation.

Form EX-17 does not renew the authorisation. It is used to request the new TIE.

Deadlines for renewing the authorisation

Many authorisations may be renewed during the 60 calendar days before expiry and the 90 calendar days afterwards. Filing after the ordinary deadline may lead to sanction proceedings. Where the applicable rules provide for it, filing within these periods keeps the previous authorisation valid until a decision is issued. Always check the deadline for your specific permit.

Requesting the new TIE

After receiving a favourable decision, request the new card if your authorisation must be documented by a TIE. As a general rule, the application must be made in person within one month of approval or of the date on which the authorisation takes effect.

• a valid passport or travel document;
• the decision or document proving the authorisation;
• proof of payment of form 790, code 012;
• a recent photograph meeting the required specifications;
• the previous TIE, where applicable;
• any additional documents required for the authorisation or by the office.

Appointment and fingerprints

Issuing the TIE requires personal attendance before the National Police. The usual process is to open the official appointment system, select the province, choose fingerprinting or TIE issuance, enter the requested details, select an office and time, and save the confirmation. The exact procedure name may vary by province.

At the appointment, submit the documents and fee receipt. The police verify your identity and take the fingerprints required to produce the card.

Collecting the TIE

The card is not normally issued on the fingerprint day. The office will tell you when and how to collect it. Keep the receipt until you receive the new TIE.

What if the TIE has expired?

An expired physical card does not necessarily mean that your residence authorisation has ended. If you filed a renewal that extends the previous authorisation until a decision is made, you may remain legally resident even though the card has expired. If you have not filed, check the applicable deadlines and requirements immediately.

Travelling with an expired TIE

An expired TIE or fingerprint receipt may not be enough to leave Spain and return. During a renewal, you may need an autorización de regreso, provided its requirements are met.

• Submitting EX-17 in the belief that it also renews the residence authorisation.
• Paying form 790, code 012, without checking the correct fee category and amount for the new card.
• Travelling outside Spain with an expired TIE without checking whether an autorización de regreso is required.
