Can a US Digital Nomad Use Savings to Cover an Income Shortfall for Spain’s Visa?

Calculate the real savings buffer needed before choosing a one-year visa or a three-year residence application.

Table of contents

Quick summary

  • Official UGE guidance permits savings or other liquid income to cover the gap between qualifying work income and the required amount.
  • The funds must cover that gap for the entire validity of the requested authorization, so the route and duration matter.
  • Savings cannot replace the qualifying foreign employment or professional relationship and its supporting evidence.
  • For 2026, the Washington consular page states €2,442 per month for a sole applicant, plus €916 for the first accompanying family member and €306 for each additional member.

The official rule permits a documented savings top-up

Under the rules checked on 29 October 2026, Spain’s UGE document for initial international-teleworker residence applications says that when income from the employment or professional contract is below the applicable minimum, the applicant must prove savings or other liquid income covering the difference for the entire validity of the authorization.

This is more precise than the common shorthand that a digital nomad must receive the whole threshold as salary or monthly invoices. It is also narrower than saying that savings alone are enough. The applicant still needs qualifying remote work and evidence of income received from it.

The joint administrative instructions on international teleworkers apply to both visas and residence authorizations. They allow any means of proof, require an individual assessment and require proof that the funds used are owned lawfully and available.

Start with the correct 2026 monthly threshold

The Digital Nomad financial reference is 200% of Spain’s monthly Minimum Interprofessional Salary for the principal applicant. Royal Decree 126/2026 set the 2026 SMI at €1,221 per month, effective for 2026. The Spanish Consulate in Washington therefore publishes these monthly amounts:

  • €2,442 for a sole applicant;
  • an additional €916 for the first accompanying family member; and
  • an additional €306 for each further family member.

UGE states that the relevant amounts are gross, before tax, Social Security or other withholding. A freelancer should therefore compare the threshold with gross qualifying professional income, while still presenting invoices and matching bank receipts.

Multiply the shortfall by the requested period

Hypothetical example: a US employee applying alone earns the euro equivalent of €2,200 gross each month. Against the 2026 reference of €2,442, the monthly difference is €242.

For a consular visa lasting one year, a simple planning calculation is €242 × 12 = €2,904. For an in-country residence authorization granted for the maximum three years, the same monthly gap becomes €242 × 36 = €8,712. A shorter work contract can lead to a shorter authorization, so the actual period requested matters.

This is the less-obvious practical consequence: a modest monthly shortfall may require a much larger bank balance when the applicant seeks the three-year residence authorization from Spain. The calculation should also include accompanying family members and a sensible exchange-rate buffer if income or savings are denominated in US dollars.

The calculation is a planning tool, not a promise of approval. UGE performs an individual assessment, and consulates control their own visa files. The Washington page refers to sufficient own financial means or a regular source of income but does not reproduce UGE’s detailed savings-gap formula; applicants filing there should follow its current checklist and be ready to explain the calculation.

What evidence should show

UGE asks for payslips or invoices from the three months before filing and a bank certificate showing the corresponding payments. Those documents establish that the qualifying work is real and remunerated.

For the top-up, the current UGE document requests updated certificates from Spanish or foreign financial institutions. They should be in the principal applicant’s name, signed or stamped by the bank, and demonstrate enough savings or other liquid income to cover the calculated difference.

A useful explanation sheet can show:

  • the filing route and requested validity period;
  • gross monthly work income in euros;
  • the applicable household threshold;
  • the monthly difference and multiplier; and
  • the account balance and any exchange-rate margin.

Avoid treating property equity, a retirement account with substantial withdrawal restrictions or a volatile investment valuation as automatically equivalent to available cash. The official standard emphasises ownership, legality and availability. If an asset cannot readily fund living costs throughout the relevant period, explain it separately rather than building the core calculation around it.

Savings do not cure a non-qualifying work arrangement

A strong bank balance cannot replace the route’s employment or professional requirements. Under Articles 74 bis and 74 ter of Law 14/2013, the applicant must perform qualifying remote work connected to companies outside Spain, show that the foreign company has operated genuinely and continuously for at least one year, and normally prove that the relevant employment or professional relationship existed for at least three months before applying.

The applicant must also meet the qualification or experience, Social Security, insurance and other conditions. Savings solve only the financial shortfall; they do not transform passive income into digital-nomad work or make an unsuitable contract eligible.

A practical filing sequence

First, decide whether the case is a consular visa or an in-country UGE residence application, because the potential validity period changes the savings calculation. Second, confirm the current SMI-based amount and add the correct family supplements. Third, calculate qualifying gross work income using recent, traceable payments rather than future estimates alone.

Then multiply any monthly difference by the full requested period and gather bank evidence in the applicant’s name. Present the work-income evidence and savings evidence as two connected parts of one calculation. If the balance is close to the minimum, leave room for exchange-rate changes and avoid moving funds in a way that makes their source unclear.

ANEMOSS ASESORÍA JURÍDICA S.L. can review the work arrangement, household threshold and savings calculation, then help organise the supporting documents for the appropriate application route. The Anemoss Digital Nomad income calculator can provide an initial household estimate, but the evidence and requested duration still require an individual review.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming savings can substitute for having qualifying remote work at all.
  • Multiplying a monthly shortfall by 12 when applying in Spain for an authorization that may last up to three years.
  • Using an investment valuation without showing ownership, liquidity and present availability.
  • Ignoring family additions or relying on a dollar estimate without allowing for exchange-rate movement.

Frequently asked questions

Can savings replace all employment or freelance income?

Do not plan on that. UGE describes savings as covering the difference when income from the qualifying employment or professional contract is below the minimum. The applicant must still prove the required foreign work relationship, actual payments and the other Digital Nomad route conditions.

Must the savings be in a Spanish bank?

The current UGE document accepts updated certificates from Spanish or foreign financial institutions. They must be in the applicant’s name and signed or stamped by the bank. A consulate may publish additional document or formatting requirements.

Can an accompanying spouse’s salary reduce the shortfall?

The official UGE checklist frames the income and bank evidence around the principal applicant. Do not assume a spouse’s earnings will be treated identically without confirming the filing authority’s approach; present household funds transparently and obtain an individual assessment.
